BSL-3 FACILITY

About

The upcoming BSL-3/ ABSL-3 facility is one of the core facilities of Pune Bio-cluster that will be located at NCCS campus. This state-of-the-art high containment facility will be designed to conduct in vitro and in vivo research with risk group 3 organisms (both bacteria and viruses) in compliance with WHO and CDC regulations. This facility will serve as an important platform for developing animal models for various infectious diseases. Upon completion and commissioning, this facility will be made available for use by researchers from external institutions as well as private companies on a chargeable basis.

Salient Features

• ~3000 sq ft fully equipped containment facility with separate sections for BSL-3 and ABSL-3 labs.
• It will be operated under differential negative pressure, and the supply and exhaust air will be filtered by HEPA filters.
• Three labs dedicated for virus studies and two dedicated for bacterial studies with standard equipment such as Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets, bacteriological incubators, CO2 incubators, centrifuges, freezers, deep freezers, microscopes etc.
• Two separate rooms for holding infected animals. Each equipped with Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets and biosafe individually ventilated cages.
• High-speed cell sorter for sorting infectious cells.
• Separate male and female lock rooms and showers for entry to both BSL-3 and ABSL-3 labs.
• Biohazardous waste generated from BSL-3 and ABSL-3 labs will be loaded to designated waste loading rooms and sterilized using double door autoclaves.
• Efficient effluent as well as biohazardous waste management system will be in place.
• The facility will be monitored and controlled through an efficient building management system.

Services

• BSL-3 and ABSL-3 labs will be available for the use of researchers on a chargeable basis
• Basic and advanced technical services (laboratory and animal) will be available on a fee to service basis
• Management and implementation of SOP for in vitro and in vivo studies based on specific research needs

Training

1. Integrated biosafety training for high containment BSL-3 laboratory
A comprehensive BSL-3 biosafety training program required to work in a BSL-3 facility. The program would cover topics such as:
- Basic lab safety procedures
- Fundamentals of working safely with biosafety cabinets
- Transportation of materials, culture, equipment and animals in and out of BSL-3/ ABSL-3 lab
- Proper disposal of biohazardous waste from BSL-3 facility
- Identification and control of hazards while working in BSL-3 facility
- Emergency procedures to be followed in BSL-3 facility

2. Generalized as well as specific training based on submitted protocols
